The circus comes to town...

On Monday my brother gave me the news that he's be in Joburg in less than 24 hours time.

Apparently this was the same amount of warning that his company had give him.

After a bit of a stuggle to find out exactly where the boy was staying since in Gareth's mind the entire ring road is called the N3 - which it's not - so when I'm told he's staying near the N3 I think of 'South'. In fact he was staying about 10 minutes or so from home.

So after work, slightly delayed by having managed to choose exactly the worst routes to traverse to that end of Roodepoort (should have gone via Westdene rather than around it) I arrived at the lad's hotel to collect him.

'Little Capetown' aka Melville beckoned, mainly since it was close - and also I'd invited Lala to join us after judo. Also I'd decided that if Gareth had no preferences on what to eat I was going to haul him off to Sakura for sushi since a) it serves the best value for money sushi in Johannesburg and b) I knew Gareth had never been into a proper sushi bar before since as far as I know there aren't any in Cape Town.

Yum yum. I looove sushi. I'm such a glut for it! However yesterday was a little special since they had butterfish nigiri on the rotator. Now I've had butterfish sushi before and it's nice - although in maki I'm most fond of tuna - however this butterfish left every piece of sushi I've ever eaten standing in the dust. I was officially the best sushi I've ever eaten. I had to restrain myself from eating every plate of it off the bar - as it was Gareth and I shared two, and I stopped myself from eating the third on my own since that would have been a little too greedy - but next time I head for Sakura, butterfish nigiri will be the order of the day! Mmmmm....butterfish....

Achem, anyway, yes.

We then went next door to Six, a cocktail bar with a fairly substantial menu of some classics and a number of more off the wall options. The more unusual stuff tends to be a bit hit or miss, but they do do a good mohito and an excellent chocolate martini. Our waitress was utterly incompetent, but fortunately she disappeared later and a far more savy little gay lad took over.

The brother was also introduced to Tony and Lala (who has now met the entire of the Saul family, but fortunately only managed to offend one of them so far).

Blah, blah blah. Good time had by all... well, I hope so at least.

In other news I'm overworked and underpaid (which may or may not be true). I've pretty much decided I can't afford to face unemployment again and freelancing sounds like too much of a risk so I'm probably going to go permanent here. At least the work is interesting even if the methodology and my computer drive me mad. Life is good, if a bit too busy. I've been eating out too much and not getting to judo enough (there were no classes last week, and well, I had an unexpected visitor yesteday.) I'll go back on Thursday work-load permitting.

We do so have proper sushi bars! Well, at least we have places which serve sushi on little conveyor belts. Next time you're down here we can even take you to one of them if you like.

Tuna and butterfish are definitely the nicest sushi fish. Salmon and sometimes eel are cool too though.

If by 'proper' you mean 'on conveyor belts' I will point you to Blowfish in Blouberg and Cape Town Fish Market in Canal Walk as two off the top of my head. There's also some place in the Waterfront, but I can't remember the name right now, as well as probably more that I can't remember/don't know about.

And I like Salmon the best =)

Oooh! That's cool.

It's been sooooo long since I've spent any real time in Cape Town I'm far from 'hip' on the eating establishments. I'll remember it indeed for the next time I'm down.

(whenever that is... in the distant future)
